A web design which screams "Hey, this website was created by a talented and artistic person!" is likely to be less effective than a website with a tasteful, simple design. Security: Preventing hacking is far easier than cleaning up a hacked website. As soon as a new website or online shop becomes popular, hacking programs will try to access it. That means, just as a website starts to appear high in Google and starts to get visitors (and enquiries and sales etc.), it can be brought down. Customer information can be compromised, customer computers can be threatened and the website can be punished by search engines. It can take several full days or even weeks to clean up the website, put security measures in place and may take months for the website to achieve its past search engine rankings.

Cost: Make sure you receive a contract, agreement or at least a list of what work will be done for how much. Make sure you receive a written copy of promises and guarantees too. As an added precaution, you should ask your web designer, "What might I want later that isn't included in this price?" 

Payment: Agree upon a payment plan before work starts. Doing business with people from other countries can be a painful experience. There are stories where customers have parted with their money only to get an email saying "Thanks for your payment but I don't want to help you now. Goodbye!" Also, companies have done thousands of dollars of website work only to get an email saying "Thanks for your work but we have no intention of paying for it."
